SA Big5K

SA BIG5K is a virtual 5KM fun-run, initiated by MicroHub's Ian Swanepoel, to remind all South Africans that we are a strong and capable nation - winners and survivors who stand in UNITY and continue to move forward. The first annual SA BIG5K was held on Saturday, 7 November 2020, which aptly collided with the one year commemoration of the Springboks Rugby World Cup Win in 2019. The event is aimed at all South Africans and those that call, or have called SA home. Our target market is broad and representative of our country's unique make-up. Participants are from all walks of life, all age groups, males and females, individuals of all languages, and all ethnic orientations. A portion of our entry fees are directed to registered beneficiaries such as schools, sport clubs and charities. We encourage these beneficiaries to help us grow the event so that their beneficiary fees can increase as well. Our team remains determined to grow this event to be the Biggest Annual 5km and Open Charity Event in South Africa with more than 100 000 participants.

Campaign Partners

Aramex Couriers and Pick 'n Pay joined the SA BIG5K team as campaign partners for the first annual event in 2020. Our goal is to expand our partner base with more and more like minded corporate organisations who will benefit from connecting with our participants. Future partners can look forward to engaging with a large group of health and wellness orientated participants who enjoy running or walking in the great South African outdoors. Corporate sponsors are invited to enter corporate teams or purchase entries for key clients, and use the SA BIG5K platform as an opportunity to build relationships and celebrate corporate unity.

Smiles, smiles everywhere. SA BIG5K started with a handful of people, living across SA, who decided not to let the Covid-19 lockdown keep them down. We wanted to make a difference and connect people across South Africa in an online community where we didn’t feel so alone. It gave us an opportunity to ‘get-up-and-go’ even when we didn’t feel like it. And so, the community of our first SA BIG5K grew from one to 1230 over a period of 3 months, with the committed members still running each week. Our first official event is a collage of ethnicity and demographic variety. What an achievement it is to get so many South Africans to GET UP AND GO in unity and staying fit in the process.
